4.0 out of 5 stars great bargain receiver, August 7, 2009

This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I did a lot of research (including Consumer Reports) and settled on this Onkyo as the best compromise between performance and price. I've had it 2 weeks now and am very happy.

The auto setup function works better than a much-more expensive Denon unit I set up for a friend. I used the microphone (included) to measure speaker levels at 3 different locations in the room and the Onkyo did everything else. (It's connected to some older Polk speakers-- they sound so much better through this amp!)

I bought this primarily to process audio from our new BluRay player and the Onkyo does an outstanding job. The sound is better than in most movie theaters! Especially BluRay DTS or HD Master. Wish more movies were recorded in these formats.

We also have our DirecTV HD DVR hooked up to the Onkyo. Audio and video travel through the HDMI Cables, so there's no need to hook up audio separately. Very nice and a feature you will find missing from some more... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but not ideal for a variety of components, November 13, 2009
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I am replacing my 17 year old Onkyo receiver and bought this after a bit of research. Much improved over the years and sounds better than the old unit. I love the sound and the easy setup. The instruction manual is great.

I have a variety of components, some HDMI, some composite video, some digital video, etc. As mentioned in other reviews, this unit will only output the same format that is input. This means that if you have composite video in, you will need to output composite video. For my situation, this meant a variety of output cables and additional button pressing when switching between components (e.g. cable box to DVD player).

Considering the cost of cables, I decided to go with the TX-SR607 because it converts all inputs to HDMI output. This means no adjustments to the TV input when switching components and no additional cables. Wish I knew this before I ordered the product and thought I would share my experience.

If all of my... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Great reciever, easy setup, less cables, July 22, 2009
This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR507 5.1-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
Just got this TX-SR507 set up.

Here are some initial impressions. The setup is very easy and fast. Had all the connections complete in less than 15 minutes. Despite some misinformation out there this receiever is not HDMI passthrough for audio. Instead it has HDMI repeater technology. This is way way better than pass through. What this HDMI repeater technology allows you to do is to run a SINGLE HDMI cable from each source (cable box, blueray, dvd player, roku box, or any other device that has hdmi out) to the reciever (you can hook up all the items into this as its loaded with HDMI inputs. From the receiver you run a SINGLE HDMI cable to your TV. Meanwhile the audio is processed by the reciever and sent out to your surround sound system. No additional toslink or analog cables needed. This feature alone is worth the extra to buy this unit. If it was only HDMI passthrough you would need to run separate cables for your surround sound in addition to the HDMI to get your audio... 5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of bang for the buck, great sound, August 26, 2009
This review is from: Onkyo HT-RC160 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
I really, really like this unit. Installing it took some time, but the sound and video switching was well worth it. Instead of having a dozen different cables running to the HDTV, I only have one - the HDMI cable.

When you install it, set aside a few hours - this has nothing to do with this particular model - just that there are so many darn connections. I hooked up my BluRay player, DVD player, VCR and CD player, as well as nine speakers and two sub-woofers. Running the cables and positioning the speakers was the most time consuming. I had no reason to use the zone 2, so used the additional two speakers as upper fronts. I did not want to go out and spend a ton of money on speakers - I used what I had on hand. If you're like me, you have a collection of speakers that build up over the years. I used two tall Fishers for the front, a studio monitor for the center, a pair of low-power cheapies from an old stereo for the front uppers, a pair of old Sony's for the... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Onkyo knows best!, October 15, 2009
This review is from: Onkyo HT-RC160 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Electronics)
Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program (What's this?)
When it comes to great sound quality at a low price, you can't go wrong with Onkyo, they make some of the best receivers that are always at a fair price.

The HT-RC160 is very easy to install, just plug and play... Well, more like plug and connect and connect and connect and connect... and play (it's lots of speaker cables, you know?) even easier if you have the Onkyo speaker set since they're color coated and all you have to do is match the speaker cable to the receiver, either way is easy enough for anyone to figure out. This Onkyo receiver also comes packed with a super technology called "2EQ automatic calibration system" which does exactly what it says, all you have to do is plug the included mic into the unit, follow some onscreen instructions and in about 10 minutes it will be done calibrating your sorround sound system, it pretty much sends some audio signals from each speaker and determines the distance between the audience (that's you) and each speaker, to give you... This review is from: Onkyo HT-RC160 7.2-Channel A/V Surround Home Theater Receiver (Electronics)
I bought the Onkyo HT-RC 160 to replace a Yamaha that I liked very much but did not have HDMI inputs. This receivers 5 HDMI inputs should handle most applications and switches flawlessly between the various inputs. I chose the Onkyo primarily because the current Yamaha remotes are ridiculous - who can really navigate that many tiny buttons? I love that I could re-name the various inputs both on the receiver and on screen; now if only one could re-name the remote labels. One thing I don't like is that after selecting an input, you have to search for the receiver to control it including, turning it off. The receiver button should be in a prominent location. So should the mute button. Another problem is connecting speaker wires to the extremely closely spaced terminals. (Yes, banana plugs would take care of that, but I have not had success connecting the plugs to the speaker wires. Another minor problem occurred with the excellent speaker setup. I have an old surround sound... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Could be a killer problem - HDMI Main Out fails at times, May 15, 2012
This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR515 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver(Black) (Electronics)
There is a problem that some of us are currently experiencing that we hope Onkyo will fix with a firmware update. Intermittently, the main HDMI out will just go dark when it goes from standby to active. It can be "fixed" by either using the second HDMI out (but you lose your onscreen displays) or by unplugging the unit and plugging it back in. I am just leaving mine on, muted, to prevent the problem, but that is not ideal either.

Onkyo is aware of the problem and is working to replicate it and find a fix. For now... I love the receiver totally and completely except for this - which, without a fix, for most people would be a deal breaker. So I don't know whether to give it five stars because it is a completely awesome piece of equipment, or a one star for the current problem. So I am cutting it in the middle and giving it a 3 star. 1 if I have to return it over this issue, 5 if they fix it. It really is a good amp.

Onkyo discussion boards have an active... Read more

3.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but the second output has it's limitations, April 19, 2012

This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR515 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver(Black) (Electronics)
I think a lot of people will be interested in this receiver for the low price point with a secondary HDMI output. While it does work, there are some limitations that I wish I was aware of.
First of all, here is my setup:
Room 1
Samsung PN64550 3D Plasma
Onkyo NR 515
Direct TV HR24-100
Original PS3

Room 2
Samsung LN46530 LCD (Non-3D)

Issue #1 with second HDMI output

You can't get sound out of your receiver speakers and your internal speakers on the second TV at the same time. As I mentioned above, my TV's are in two different rooms. The 3D plasma is using the speakers hooked up to the AVR and I would like to use the internal speakers on the second TV. Once I turn off the receiver, it will send audio to the second TV via the HDMI standby pass through. If you are never planning to watch both TV's at once, then I guess this isn't a big deal. I asked Onkyo support for a work around but I haven't heard back yet... Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Wish I had looked closer, but love it., May 23, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo TX-NR515 7.2-Channel Network A/V Receiver(Black) (Electronics)
I really have no major complaints about this AV reciever, but I wish I had looked closer at the inputs. Please take notice, there are no S-video inputs for the non-DVI sources. I still have my S-VHS tape deck and a Pioneer Laser Disk that I would like to connect. My older TX-SR604 had S-video inputs for these, but fewer DVI (2) inputs. This is my fault for not looking closer at the rear panel prior to purchase. The TX-SR604 also had a switched outlet on the rear so that my sub-woofer could be powered off with the reciever. Even if you Upgrade the the NX818, these features are not available at almost 3x the price. These are not deal breakers for me. All in all, the NR515 sounds better than the older Onkyo. I do like the network ability as well as the apps that are available. The new graphic interface is very nice, a major upgrade over the SR604, and it cost less. The UFW-1 Wi-Fi adapter worked with no problems, despite many of the bad reviews I read for it. Of all of the NX line from... Read more
