Product Description

The KEF KHT3005 (SE) 5.1 home theater speaker system is an extremely high performance, yet room-friendly home theater system, which raises both the design and performance benchmarks in the category of elegant home theater speaker packages. KEF's patented "sit anywhere" Uni-Q driver configuration places the tweeter in the acoustic center of the bass/midrange cone. This creates a single focused audio source that disperses the sound image evenly throughout the room so that everyone enjoys the full richness of music or movie soundtracks. The Uni-Q array in the 3000 series has a completely new design which performs better than ever. Instead of having identical center and satellite speakers like other systems, KEF's created a stunning new dedicated center channel that gives dialogue more weight and clarity delivering cinema-like frontal impact. KEF also added a radical new high performance powered subwoofer. As a system, it certainly puts the 'live' into living room.

5.0 out of 5 stars Super Sound, March 25, 2008
Scotty (Austin, TX) - See all my reviews
Following a "test listen" I had to have these great-sounding speakers. The KEFs replace an Infinity TSS-1200 system in my home theater. Driven by an Onkyo 805 receiver, the sound is noticeably better. The bass is clear, solid, and avoids the "boomy" sound of many subs. Mids and highs are solid with smooth transients. The speakers handle high volume levels without apparent strain or distortion. Special effects on TrueHD sound tracks rock. Music brings out subtleties that were previously lacking. Sound-wise, the KEFs can't be beat in their price range.

These speakers are beautifully constructed. The satellites and center channel are of solid aluminum construction with an immaculate black painted surface. They feel as hefty as they sound. I do wish that the mounting system allowed for easier use of standard speaker stands. On the other hand, KEFs solution is elegant in its simplicity. The accessory stands are solid, easy to use, and unobtrusive. Speaker... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Kef 3005s, July 19, 2008

After using a pair of KEF 304s (30 years old!) with a pair of JBL bookshelf speakers, a Bose center speaker and a Polk Audio sub with a Sony 600w as my home theater setup, I decided to go the matched route. I read the reviews, looked at Sat systems like the Bose and the Mirage Omnisats, but settled on the KEFs (30 years with my last pair!!). What a great decision. I matched them up with a Yamaha RX-V663BL and did a rough setup (they go up on the walls later). What a great sound, and they are only roughly dialed-in. My room is about 13x28 and they just fill it with multi-directional sound. And what clean sound it is (they don't call KEFs reference speakers for nothing). Plenty of bass, clean mids, and nice bright (but not harsh) highs. I have the DTS version of Goldeneye on right now, and it is really swooping around the room plus bouncing me on the couch with its bass effects. I highly recommend this system!

5.0 out of 5 stars KEF KHT3005SE Awesome Set, August 15, 2008
Clifford W. Pepper "CP" (Silicon Valley) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I just bought a new set of KEF KHT3005SE speakers. They are truly remarkable. I still have my Bose Lifestyle 38. Even though the Bose is a good compact system, these KEF speakers are so much better. The sound quality on the KEF's are inspirational. You can hear every High,Mid,low and lfe low without question. The sound is warm and BIG!! Even though they are small speakers they will give you the impression that they are big tower speakers. I set my crossover to 80Hz. With the Bose I had to set my crossover to 150Hz. The sound on the Bose is muddied compared to the KEF's which are crystal clear. This is due to the Uni-Q application which fits a tweeter in the center of the speaker giving it the crystal clear timbre. The sub on the KEF is a solid performer as well. The sub produces a clear bass response with very little boom and no distortion. If your thinking about buying a Bose system first try out the KEF KHT3005SE. I thought the BOSE Lifestyle system's were excellent however after... Read more

This review is from: Yamaha RX-397 100 Watt Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver (Electronics)
Despite the current fad for multi-channel audio/video receivers, the majority of people still listen to music with two speakers and only need a two-channel stereo receiver to drive them. As fanatic audiophiles with excellent stereo speakers, my wife and I recently purchased this receiver because of very good previous experience with Yamaha electronics products. This is a superb receiver in all respects. Some people may think that they need more than this receiver's rated power of 50 watts per channel, but Yamaha's power ratings are extremely conservative and this receiver will drive virtually any speakers to deafening levels (which I don't recommend doing). More important than it's ample power is its very low distortion. Yamaha specializes in low distortion products for very clean sound. In addition to robust power and ultra-low distortion the RX-397 has a full complement of controls, plus an easy to use remote. But as a fanatic audiophile another feature, typical of Yamaha, which I... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Sound, June 29, 2008
The Genius - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yamaha RX-397 100 Watt Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver (Electronics)
The first receiver i ever purchased was a Sony 5.1 500 watt surround system, that was when i was only 13 years old and didnt fully understand the little differences. Well im now 17 years old and im getting sick of the surround sound because for the most part i only use the stereo setting. So i had some extra money and thought i would pick of a new receiver. But what to get i looked at many different ones and even thought about getting a 7.1 pioneer. Then i realized its kind of a waste being that i only want to continue using 2 speakers. So i went to the store looking for a Stereo Receiver. I found some by Denon, Sony and Onkyo as well as Yamaha.

I have now had it for a week, which may not seem long but after hearing the difference in quality between this and my old system i had to write something. While my old system had more bass, this system has a cleaner tighter bass, not to mention the volume can go a lot high here. I loved having all the controls laid out without being... Read more

This review is from: Yamaha RX-397 100 Watt Natural Sound AM/FM Stereo Receiver (Electronics)
This is my first review.

A couple of weeks ago, I purchased the Yamaha RX-397 receiver to replace one of my old receivers from the 1980's. (Back then, stereos actually had knobs that you could get a hold of).

Most stereo equipment sold these days has a lot of "fluff" without much "substance". Everything seems to have unwanted channels, frilly complicated displays, cheap tiny push-buttons (that you can't see), and remote controls so complex that they should be able to control the space shuttle.

The Yamaha RX-397 is refreshingly different. It has rotary controls with a nice professional feel, a clean simple layout, quality jacks in the rear ----- just like a real stereo receiver should. One of the most impressive things are the speaker hookups. They are large heavy duty screw type knobs with excellent wire protection and separation.

The RX-397 is now at home in my backyard woodworking / hobby shop.
My shop has difficult acoustics but the... Read more

This system is amazing. Tons of options, lots of configurations for setting up everything, and tons of settings. The Audyssey sound set up make setting up everything and optimizing your system flawless and easy. The lack of proprietary connections means that replacement parts are cheap, easy to find and customize. The sound is great compared to previous Sony 5.1 system.

When you buy this system also get new wires, it comes with 24 gauge wires, I suggest 16 gauge, also get banana plugs (They make for a cleaner and nicer looking setup.)

Only a few problems, which is why I gave it 4 stars;
Needs an update bad to have better functionality with a PS3. Turn deep color off on the PS3 for it to work properly.
Wires are too small as mentioned above.
Lack of Android support compared to Apple support
Key hole mounting on speakers vs screw in mounting.

(EDIT 9/9/12) Okay so I have had this product for close to three months now and I am... Read more

I have waited about 6 weeks to post a review on this product, due to some reviews having issues with there subwoofer and other issues. Let me first start off by saying, I have not had any issues with the home theater system (knock on wood).

The sound this system makes with my new Vizio M3D550KD 55-Inch 240 Hz Class Theater 3D Edge Lit Razor LED LCD HDTV with VIZIO Internet Apps - Black, is unbelievable. I have the speakers mounted to Pinpoint White Speaker Wall/Ceiling Mount for Pre-Wired Home Theater - Pinpoint AM20W, except the center speaker which I have sitting on my entertainment center.

To calibrate the sound to match your room, use the Audyssey... Read more

1.0 out of 5 stars Major problem after Major problem..., July 20, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Onkyo HT-S5500 7.1-Channel Home Theater Speaker/Receiver Package (Electronics)
I had this for a week and had nothing but problems with it. 10 minutes after getting it set up the subwoofer died. A day after having it I was having problems with it noticing I had things plugged into the inputs on the HDMI ports. Would always have to pull it out and jiggle the HDMI cable port to make the picture show up. Once the picture did show up the sound would be great for about 5 minutes and then would start popping like crazy. Then the next day I was playing Call of Duty on the PS3 and audio would drop out every 5 seconds. Extremely annoying. I would not recommend this system. I usually have little problems with things like this that I can fix and it starts working after the initial set-up sets in but I have never had so many different problems with one item before. Very frustrating. I've returned it for a refund because I don't trust that another unit would have non of these problems.
