This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR505 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
-- Start of 10/15/07 update --
I have now moved my home theater setup into the new 20x20 room. I installed the new 4 Polk Audio RM6751 surround speakers on the side and rear walls and reused the Energy speakers up front. I ran the receiver's Audyssey 2EQ automatic speaker setup which did a surprisingly good job at determining the size and distance of the speakers from them main TV viewing position. It was perfect, off by a foot for some speakers but very close. I proceeded to test the entire home theater using some action space sequences from Star Wars Episode 3 which has a Dolby Digital EX 6.1 audio track. All I can say is WOW. The new room and 7.1 speakers has really allowed this Onkyo receiver to shine. It sounded good in the old room but was somewhat limited by the poor room layout. In the new room it sounds nothing short of amazing. The surround effect sounds very well blended and non-localized as they should. This is an excellent sounding entry level 7.1... Read more

I purchased this receiver because it offered all the features I required. My current setup is 5.1 but this system will allow me to easily transition to 7.1 It comes with three connections. My only gripe was that it required an additional conection for audio. The HDMI cable would only passthru the video signal, audio has to come through a separate connection. There goes the simple setup solution. Other than that, this is a wonderful unit that offers many highend features of more expensive units.

This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR505 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I hooked this up to a new Infinity speaker system (pair of Primus PC362s, PC350 center and 4 CS60 in wall speakers) for a 7.1 setup for my new basement home theater. Sound is absolutely amazing. You hear effects in movies and music that were not there before. My other setup is an older Sony model receiver with older Infinity speakers and this does not even compare.

The need for separate audio setups for HDMI connections is not a huge deal to me, I have the cables already so why not use them. Even so, to spend $30 in cables to save $150 on the receiver (compared to the Onkyo 605) seems like a deal to me. I personally would not be using the analog to HDMI up-conversion so that is another reason to go with the lower cost of the 505.

The auto speaker setup was a snap. Gone are the hours or measuring and tweaking speaker setups!

This system has more than enough wattage to rattle the windows in my house.

IMHO, unless you desperately need the... Read more

This review is from: Marantz SR6006 AV Receiver (Electronics)
In summary, this is the best recevier I have personally ever owned or "heard" for that matter.

This is the third receiver I've owned and the first one over 1000 dollars. My other systems sounded nice from what I could tell (A digital panasonic around ~300 and a ~500 dollar JVC), but I needed something with HDMI inputs and dual outputs so I could do a single HDMI run to my new Optoma HD33 3d projector as well as display a mirrored signal to my 46" samsung LCD for the kids and for shows during the day.

As such, I was primarily shopping receivers with dual video 1.4a HDMI output so I could send my HTPC and PS3 signals to both my 46" LCD as well as the Projector.
I was looking at the Denon 3312 and the Onkyo NR809, but decided to go with this one based on reviews elsewhere comparing the three. Most said that the sound quality of this one was the best in their opinion. I don't have the time to really go and find a place to audition them so I figured I would... Read more

5.0 out of 5 stars impressive for stereo listening, October 11, 2011
This review is from: Marantz SR6006 AV Receiver (Electronics)
I've always been a fan of stereo audio reproduction. However, after buying a set of Bowers & Wilking CM8's about 6 months ago, I've started to notice that the room setup and acoustics are equally important as your audio reproduction chain. For me that became manifest when using the CM8's (which is a highly transparent and revealing speaker) in an apartment with all concrete walls and solid floor and ceiling. The sound in my pure stereo system became like a tin can. It felt constrained and the speakers sounded way smaller than their size (or what I heard from them in the store for that matter).

As I knew changing the acoustics of the room would be a no-go (as my spouse wouldn't be too thrilled in having all sorts of room treatment), I became interested in the possibilities of using the room correction features in AV receivers. Also, I wanted to get a warmer sound than the class-D Rotel amp I was using giving me. This is the story I brought to my HiFi store.

And it... Read more

Looks beautiful, sound on my system is better than ever. Love the fact that the menu comes up on the TV...I am used to having to page through on the receiver itself. The receiver told me to upgrade firmware and I did with no problems. Menu took a little time to get familiar with, but now I have it under control. This replaces my Harmon Kardon AVR 630 that I have had for a few years, and what an upgrade. A tip...the Audyssey mic is in a white box, that is in the styrofoam itself. I searched all over for it, then called the seller to tell him it was not included in box, he told me where it was "hidden"...he said he get's the question "frequently".
Also to get this receiver set up on my Harmony 1100 remote I had to tell the remote it was a SR6005..I guess they don't have the SR6006 in their database yet.

This receiver does a great job. It replaced a 7 yr old Denon 1601 that quit working one night. It drives my 5.1 Polk system at least as good as the older Denon, which always sounded great. At this price, good sound quality is probably a given, so this review is more about the features that set this unit apart. Let's talk video first.

The nice thing about the video processing is that you can hook anything up to it, and it will send the video feed to your TV through one cable. Its basically a big switch, letting you easily change between A/V sources. You just leave your TV on the input through which it is connected, and it feeds the TV whatever source you pick, and sends the audio through the speakers. I hooked up my Samsung DLPSamsung HL-S5688W 56" 1080p DLP HDTV to it via the HDMI output. I used the two HDMI... Read more

This review is from: Onkyo TX-SR605 7.1 Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) (Electronics)
I purchased this receiver to replace a five year old Sony. The sound is amazing but there are several strange feature constraints.

Strengths:
-Excellent sound quality
-Intuitive auto speaker setup using the included remote microphone
-On-screen setup is a nice feature that's usually not included in this price range
-720p up-scaling for composite and component inputs look great
-HDMI output video quality is excellent - comparable to a direct connect between the TV and video source

Weaknesses
-Only two HDMI inputs
-Lacks compatibility with separate HDMI switches
-Can't use a digital audio source for zone 2 (no iPods, XM radio, Satellite, etc.)
-Can't display on-screen status (i.e. volume) via HDMI output
-There's an intermittent audio delay of 10-30 seconds between changing HDMI input selections
-On-screen setup is very rudimentary (but easy to navigate)
-Remote IR sensor is less sensitive than Sony... Read more

While I have been an A/V buff for many years, I do not go off the deep end buying a myriad of equipment to play anything and everything. I carefully research every piece of gear before I buy(ad nauseam, if you listen to my girlfriend) to do what I want and have the flexibility to handle upgrades in associated components. That said, I have to admit I didn't wait for the TX-SR605 be on the market for more than a week before I purchased one. No magazine reviews, Amazon listings, online blogs, etc had reviewed one when I purchased mine the day after the receiver hit the shelves on the West Coast.
This receiver should handle most A/V enthusiast's needs for the next several years. The OSD is very straight forward and the listening field calibration(mic included)works well to get you started. It could use a third HDMI input (available on the next unit up, TX-SR705, for $200 more) but with the up-conversion, it will handle component level inputs with no visible difference(IMO). I...
